lukey's first vacation - bolinas, california

We went on Lukey's first vacation this past week. As a gift a friend from work gave us the use of her home in Bolinas. I begged my sister Melanie to come with Lucas and I and keep us company. She flew down on Monday and we headed out over the Golden Gate Bridge up Highway 1 to Bolinas. This was the first time Melanie got to meet Lukey.
We woke up Tuesday morning and headed off to Point Reyes. Our first stop was the town of Point Reyes Station for some much needed gas and coffee for Melly. We then headed into Point Reyes National Seashore. Our first stop was the Point Reyes Lighthouse. It was super foggy on the coast. After we made the 1/4 mile hike to the lighthouse we could barely see it through the fog. We also couldn't walk down to it due to it being closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Who knew? We took some photos not that you can tell where we are.

Pretty Melly.

Our next stop was a hike to Chimney Rock. In the guidebook it was rated a 10 for scenic beauty. It was beautiful. We saw deer, elephant seals and a butterfly. It was a regular nature walk. Lucas managed to sleep through most of it. When we got to chimney walk he woke up and started screaming. He just wanted to let everyone know that he had just completed his first hike. He fell back asleep and we walked back to check out the elephant seals.
Our final stop of the day was the beach. It was around 3:30 and the fog finally cleared away for a dazzling sunny day. We went to Limantour beach and sat in the sand. We took a few more pictures and Lukey had a meal on the beach. We spotted a dolphin in the surf and Melanie tried to get some video of it. We had a great day and after an early dinner we headed back to the house to soak in the hot tub and veg out. (Lukey did not partake in the hot tub. He watched from his car seat.)
On Wednesday we woke up a bit later and were planning on heading home in the afternoon. We started the day again at Point Reyes Station so Melly could do a little book shopping. We had a yummy lunch and then headed out to Samuel P. Taylor State Park to introduce Lukey to the redwood trees. It was a pretty drive from the coast inland to the redwood forest. We went on a hike through the redwoods. It was a beautiful sunny day. Lucas again slept through much of it. He woke up and we sat at some picnic tables so he could have some lunch.
A nice first little vacation for Lucas. Next up is Connecticut in October. Thanks to Melly for coming and spending time with us. Lukey can't stop talking about you.

Lukey's Birth Day - July 13, 2010

Your daddy and I were really excited when we found out I was pregnant. We'd been looking forward to a baby for a long while. As the weeks went on and my tummy continued to grow we were beside ourselves with joy that we would soon get to meet you.
I was determined to have a nice and peaceful natural birth for you. Your daddy and I went to lots of classes to learn all about natural birth methods. We practiced special breathing techniques and listened to guided meditations every night before bed. I went to prenatal yoga every Sunday and enjoyed that time focusing on you inside me. We decorated your nursery slowly through the months while we waited for you. It was pretty much done by the end of June just in case you decided to arrive early. We wanted to be ready.
Your official due date was July 4, 2010. It would have been neat to have a little 4th of July baby but you decided you weren't done cooking. You wanted to stay with me a bit longer. By the time your due date came and went we decided it was time to get things moving. I went for long walks with your Grandpa at the Lafayette reservoir, I got acupuncture and acupressure and I even ate a special pizza that was supposed to induce labor. Nothing really worked. I continued to have sporadic contractions but nothing that stuck around.
Then on Monday night, July 12, 2010, your daddy, grandpa and me had a nice dinner of BBQ ribs. I started having contractions during dinner and they continued. Daddy and I then had some Neapolitan ice cream (a craving at that time) and we decided we would watch True Blood (a show you are much too young for). During True Blood my contractions started getting stronger and I started having some pretty bad pain under my chest. I thought I had some really bad heartburn. Your daddy called our wonderful doula, Teri, and let her know that I was having continuous contractions and some heartburn. Daddy and I tried to get some sleep (daddy succeeded) but I couldn't lie down. The heartburn was hurting too much and I was having difficulty breathing through the contractions. Daddy called Teri again and she came over to help me. We tried some aromatherapy and foot massage but the heartburn pain was getting to me. I did many laps around the kitchen. I finally decided to get in the shower to see if the warm water would help. Around that time your daddy got up to check on me and I asked him to please call labor and delivery and ask them about the heartburn. Daddy gave them a call and they said to come to the hospital. After some last minute packing and gathering daddy and I were off to the hospital around 2:00 a.m. The hospital is only about 2o minutes away but it was a long and uncomfortable 20 minutes.
After we got checked in we were taken to triage where they checked me out. I was not doing so good. My blood pressure was through the roof and I was close to having a seizure. I had preeclampsia and my so called heartburn was actually an inflamed liver thanks to a lovely complication called HELLP. The doctor thought that I should deliver you as soon as possible. We were admitted and they broke my water to speed things along. I was given pitocin to speed up the contractions and to counter the magnesium they gave me to get my blood pressure down. I toughed it out for as long as I could but due to the intensity of the liver pain I ended up asking for an epidural. My little Lukey, that epidural was the best thing ever. It got rid of that nasty liver pain and I could actually look around the room and talk again. Your daddy tells me that I didn't talk from the moment we got to the hospital until after I got the epidural at noon. You had all sorts of people waiting to meet you. Your daddy was there as were your grandpa, grandma, godmommy Erin, and our doula Teri. Your uncle Nicholas was waiting patiently in the waiting room for your arrival.
Around 3:30 in the afternoon I was given the okay to start pushing. Little Lukey, I pushed and pushed for around 3 1/2 hours and finally with a little help from the vacuum and the doctor you made your big arrival into this world at 7:15 p.m. on July 13, 2010. There was nothing better than hearing your little cry. I was so happy that we would finally get to hold you and cuddle you and give you all the kisses we had been saving up for 9 long months.
You were a big baby weighing in at 8lbs 7 ounces and measuring 20.75 inches. Unfortunately you had some trouble regulating your breathing so you were taken to the NICU. I got to stare at your perfect little face before you were taken to be monitored. Your daddy went with you so he could come back and let me know just how perfect and wonderful you were.
Over the next couple of days in the hospital we got to cuddle, kiss and take care of you. You never ceased to amaze us. No matter what you did we thought it was the cutest thing in the world.

Hanging out with daddy in NICU.

Getting cuddles from Grandpa.

Enjoying our celebration dinner.

Going home!
Lukey we are so glad you are finally here and we can snuggle you and love you. You are the best ever and you couldn't have made your daddy and me any happier.
